Rhus copallinum, the winged sumac, shining sumac, dwarf sumac or flameleaf sumac, is a species of flowering plant in the cashew family that is native to eastern North America. It is a deciduous tree growing to 3.5–5.5 metres tall and an equal spread with a rounded crown.
The leaves and bark of most sumac species contain high levels of tannins and have been used in the manufacturing of leather by many cultures around the world. The dried fruits of some species are ground to produce a tangy, crimson spice popular in many countries. Fruits are also used to make a traditional "pink lemonade" beverage by steeping them in water before straining to remove hairs which may irritate the mouth or throat, sometimes adding sweeteners such as honey or sugar. Although widely and erroneously stated to be rich in vitamin C, most Rhus species contain only trace amounts and none should be considered a dietary source of this nutrient. I specialize in fine art landscape images. I live and work in Beaverton, Oregon USA and my landscape photos are taken primarily in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Favorite subjects are Reflections, Puffy Clouds, Colorful Sunsets and Sunrises, Lakes and Rivers, Silhouettes, and the Beach. I will sometimes shoot other subjects, such as wildlife, flowers, etc. I also occasionally convert photos into digital painting art. I shoot with a Canon 5D Mk III camera and a new Canon R5 camera, Canon & Sigma lenses, Gobe 3 peak filters and edit with Affinity Photo on a Macintosh.
