Description
Mount Bachelor west of the city of Bend, in central Oregon. Named Mount Bachelor because it "stands apart" from the nearby Three Sisters to the northwest. A very popular ski resort and outdoor recreation destination. The lake barely seen in the photo is Sparks Lake.
Mount Bachelor, formerly named Bachelor Butte, is a dormant volcano in the Cascade Range. The volcano's summit hosts the Mount Bachelor Observatory, located at an elevation of 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above sea level, and maintained by a research group at the University of Washington and the ski resort. Research at the observatory investigates long-range transport of pollution from the Asian continent, measuring chemical features of plumes that reach the Pacific Northwest.
